My friend Stanley celebrates (in pandemic isolation) his eightieth birthday today. A few years ago Rob Lee conducted this interview with Stanley. Stanley says some kind things about me and Patsy and also gave me some advice. You might enjoy giving thanks to God for Stanley by listening to this interview.

Tell Stanley for me: “Welcome to the club. Member since 10/7/19.” Really, 80 always sounded so ancient in my earlier days, but now that it’s here, it ain’t so bad. Not ready to go along with the ancient TV show of my youth & say that “Life Begins at 80,” but, in terms Stanley will appreciate, it sure as hell doesn’t end, either. Give him whatever hug is allowed & tell him I’m always proud of him & love his long love affair with Duke Divinity School & his students. Like it or not, he is a model professor.

Dear Will & Stan:
Long years ago, say 1992 or 3, Provost Tom Langford, my former favorite professor & longtime friend as well as across the street neighbor of Al Fisher, invited me to serve on a committee of faculty & me reviewing Dennis Campbell’s tenure as Dean. Not sure how I was chosen, but it was an interesting, memorable experience especially our interviews with Stanley & Fred Herzog, another of my favorites as a teacher & person. Tom & I always had fun conversations in his office or in the hallway or at Al’s enjoying steamed oysters & other good things. I recall in particular how much he enjoyed Stanley & his penchant for recommending books to Tom. That was relatively early in Stanley’s career but it told me that he was a keeper and that Tom was definitely in his corner, and certainly did not want to lose him to SMU! So glad he stuck around, and that you, Will, are back for your 3rd iteration. The Lord indeed works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform.
